3 Odour The ability to detect and remember an odour is very valuable in qualitative organic chemistry. 0-41 SYSTEMATIC IDENTIFICATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS Many types of organic compounds have characteristic odours. It is not possible to describe odours in a precise manner, but the student should become familiar with the odours of common compounds. Alcohols have odours (generally have pleasant smell) different from those of esters (fruity smell), phenols from amines (fish like smell), aldehydes from ketone, mercaptans, isonitriles usually are described as possessing disagreeable odours - but they differ from each other.

Filtrate: Collect the filtrate in a beaker and cool it in an ice bath. Acidify the solution by adding concentrated hydrochloric acid dropwise (test with litmus paper) and cool the resulting solution in an ice bath. (i) Appearance of solid : This is compound-2 which is carboxylic acid. This acid is water insoluble. (ii) If compound does not precipitate, collect the solution in a beaker or porcelain dish. Heat it carefully on a wire gauze till the volume of the filtrate is reduced to one-fourth of the original volume.
