Black Light is a voyage of discovery and transformation. Set in Iran, it tells the tale of Jamshid, a quiet uncomplicated carpet mender, who at some point by surprise commits a homicide and is pressured to escape. With this violent act his outdated existence ends and an odd new life begins.

Galway Kinnell combines his present for distinct imagery with a storyteller's ability during this trip around the Iranian desert—away from the delicate self-righteous virtues of followed ethical culture, into the ailment and sexual confusion of agonizing self-knowledge.

First released in 1966 by means of Houghton Mifflin, this widely revised paperback variation of Black Light brings a special novel again into print

But as he lay there he felt the strangeness of this material under his hands—an earth made of stones that had been grated, rained, blown, and burnt into a substance that was hardly earth at all, but a form of disappearance, a substance into which one of the world’s great empires had gone away. As if death had been ground up and strewn here in a thick layer. He saw the Galway Kinnell 55 jagged, unburdened columns rising in the darkness and the great stones with their heavy, closed eyes. He lay a long time hearing the noise before he started listening to it.

What matter? He hated his life anyway, and the earth that killed you the moment you lay down on it. But he would take his killer into the grave with him. He reached for it, but he only felt his neck, perfectly unswollen. The moon was down, he saw, and the constellations had slid a long way. About his loins his trousers were damp and cold. He felt pleased with himself. A scorpion had walked across him, and he had merely pissed and dozed off. ” The land was rolling, heaved, and mountains were always on the horizons.

How is that for advice? Ah, Hafez. . It seems that he knows us, each of us, so well . ” Jamshid had only meant to be sensible but he saw he had offended the yellow-faced man. ” the fellow said. “At half my age you are already wizened. ” He rattled Jamshid’s shoulder. “You think you can tell me what a man can do or cannot do. You look to me as if you’ve never seen the Rose of Love at all . ” Jamshid was only too aware that, as far as he was concerned, the Rose of Love had never so much as blossomed but only budded and died.
