But it was odd being a chemist among the people who studied the big fish and their survival in water that should have frozen their blood solid, or the seal people from Scripps, with their wooden houses out on the sea ice. I used to go there at night by the deep hole where seals appeared, their eerie breathing from the big head, alive with me, their brown eyes searching my face and then submerging and returning to look again. The guys who dove for starfish in the Sound were from Scripps too. They lived with the bright starfish in the dark muck of the sediment.
