Many in Catullus’ audience would have enjoyed his poetry in all three ways, sometimes reading privately, sometimes listening in a group, sometimes listening by themselves. But whether visually or aurally, they would have perceived the poems in the same way—sequentially, as the book that contained them was unrolled. However the audience received them, the oral component of the poems was always important—much more than it is for us. Reading aloud was an essential element of elite education. 40 Reading is the correct performance of poetic or prose texts.
