Rather, I hope to use the theoretical insights outlined in this chapter to identify major patterns in the relationship between Japanese consumer movement activism and the broader political system while simultaneously highlighting the political and social meaning of those patterns. By injecting an element of cross-national comparison into the analysis, I also intend to show that Japanese consumer organizations are logical and even influential reflections of their historical and political circumstances.
