It may be, however, that among the more knowledgeable artists, its reputation was inferior to that of Victor or Columbia, chiefly because of its lower standards of recording and pressing and, in some cases, because of its poorer distribution.

S. Decca. Zonophone Originally independent, Zonophone was acquired by the Gramophone Company in 1903. Numerous country items from Victor, including many by Jimmie Rodgers, were issued in the 5000/6000 series and a more diverse selection in the 4000 export series, destined for the South African market. ) The label was merged with Regal in January 1933 to become Regal-Zonophone. ) Indian (by John Stoten and Tony Russell) A remarkable quantity of country material—between 300 and 400 couplings—was issued in the Indian subcontinent in the 1930s and early 1940s, chiefly on HMV and Twin, labels of the Gramophone Company, a subsidiary of the British firm of that name.

This series closed at MR3824 in 1949. Other Regal-Zonophone series included country issues, but always of material that had already appeared in the MR catalog. The IZ series was sold exclusively in Ireland.
